Indonesia was hit by a 6.7 magnitude earthquake early morning Monday, April 4, 2011, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
The earthquake struck south of Java, Indonesia and the Pasific Tsunami Warning Center has already warned local authorities in Indonesia of a possible tsunami.
The bulletin issued following the quake states that there's no threat of a destructive widespread but there's a very small possibility of a local tsunami.
"A DESTRUCTIVE WIDESPREAD TSUNAMI THREAT DOES NOT EXIST BASED ON
HISTORICAL EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI DATA.
HOWEVER - THERE IS A VERY SMALL POSSIBILITY OF A LOCAL TSUNAMI
THAT COULD AFFECT COASTS LOCATED USUALLY NO MORE THAN A HUNDRED
KILOMETERS FROM THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER. AUTHORITIES IN THE
REGION NEAR THE EPICENTER SHOULD BE MADE AWARE OF THIS
POSSIBILITY."
During the last 7 years, Indonesia was already struck with two powerful earthquakes.
First was in December 2009, when 9.1 quake hit Sumatra, Indonesia and triggered a destructive tsunami affecting not only Indonesia but also other countries bordering the Indian Ocean. An estimate of more than 200 thousand people were killed, and 160k of them were from Indonesia.
It's considered as the 3rd deadliest earthquake ever in history.
And then another earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 jolted Indonesia in September 2009 with 57 people killed and over 400 were injured.
