Gwendolyn Ruais is Miss Word Philippines 2011 winner

Gwendolyn Ruais won Miss World Philippines 2011 during the coronation night held Sunday, September 18, 2011, at the PICC.

Gwendolyn Ruais becomes the first ever Filipina to win such pageant, whose winner will be the Philippines' bet to the Miss World 2011 beauty pageant to be held in London this November.

Twenty (25) candidates competed in the 1st Miss World Philippines pageant, which was aired via GMA 7 and was hosted by Dingdong Dantes, Carla Abellana and Isabelle Daza.

Gwendolyn Ruais Miss World Philippines 2011 winner

At 5'11, Gwendolyn, who's half-French, was the tallest candidate in the pageant and is now the tallest "Miss Philippines" in recent years.

She's 21 years old and measures (wow!) 36-26-36.

During the 2010 Binibining Pilipinas pageant, it was a big disappointment when Gwendolyn settled only as a Top 10 semi-finalist and wasn't secured with any of the 3 major titles.

Mykiru listed Gwendolyn then as its favorite to win the Binibining Pilipinas-World crown, but that didn't happen in 2010, instead it happened a year later when she joined Miss World Philippines 2011 and easily won the title.

Gwendolyn also competed in the 2010 Asian Super Model competition held in China, and won the Best in Catwalk award.

Miss Universe 2011 Finals - Replay Video

The Miss Universe 2011 finals was held September 12, 2011 at the Credicard Hall in Sao Paulo, Brazil with Miss Angola Leila Lopes as the winner, the first ever from Angola and the 4th African woman to be crowned Miss Universe.

Hosted by Andy Cohen (Bravo's "Watch What Happens Live") and Natalie Morales (NBC's "Today"), the Miss Universe 2011 finals, which also happened to be the pageant's 60th anniversary, started with the introduction of the 89 lovely candidates.

Miss USA 2004 (and Miss Universe 2004 1st Runner Up) Shandi Finnessey and STYLE Network’s Jeannie Mai served as commentators.

The announcement of the Top 16 semi-finalists followed. The Top 16 were: (in order of announcement) France, Kosovo, Colombia, China, Angola, Australia, Puerto Rico, Brazil, Netherlands, USA, Ukraine, Panama, Costa Rica, Portugal, Philippines and Venezuela.

While Miss Portugal was called to join the Top 16, the commentators announced that she's the one who won the online fan voting conducted at missuniverse.com which secured her a slot in the semis. It was the first time in Miss Universe history that a semi-finalist was selected by the fans via online voting.

A big favorite, Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup was still shocked to hear her name being called as one of the semi-finalists. Commentators took notice of that and described her as "humble".

The judges who were given the toughest job of selecting this year's Miss Universe included: 3-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helios Castroneves, Actress-Producer Vivica A. Fox, Miss Universe 2003 Amelia Vega, "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star Adrienne Maloof, Houston hair care magnet Farouk Shami, Brazilian supermodel Isabeli Fontana, CONCACAF Deputy Secretary General Italo Zanzi, US Broadcast Legend Connie Chung and Tony-winning actress Lea Salonga. Lea was also introduced as the voice of Princess Jasmine in Disney's "Aladdin".

After the introduction of judges, it was announced that Miss Panama Sheldry Saez won the Best National Costume award.

Top 10 Best National Costume: 1. Panama 2. Mexico 3. Thailand 4. Venezuela 5. Curacao 6. Trinidad & Tobago 7. Tanzania 8. Bolivia 9. Nigeria 10. Japan

Then the Top 16 competed in swimsuits and the Top 10 were announced who later competed in their evening gowns. The Top 10 were: Australia, Costa Rica, France, Ukraine, Portugal, Panama, Philippines, Angola, China and Brazil.

The Top 5 finalists were revealed (Ukraine, Philippines, China, Brazil, Angola) and they had to deal with the grueling Question and Answer Portion.

Miss Angola was crowned winner with Miss Ukraine as 1st Runner Up, Brazil as 2nd Runner Up, Philippines as 3rd Runner Up and China as the 4th Runner Up.

Leila Lopes, Miss Angola, is Miss Universe 2011 winner

Miss Angola Leila Lopes has just been crowned Miss Universe 2011!

Miss Angola Leila Lopes (Miss Angola) reacts after being named Miss Universe 2011 winner (Screenshot from Ao Vivo's live broadcast)

Angola's Leila Lopes was crowned Miss Universe 2011 during the live pageant finale held Monday, September 12, 2011, in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Though already one of the favorites, no one predicted Miss Angola Leila Lopes to end up as Miss Universe 2011 winner, but thanks to her great performance during the finals, especially during the final Q & A.

Miss Angola was able to beat 88 other lovely candidates, including mega favorites Ukraine (who finished 1st Runner Up), Philippines (3rd Runner Up) and China (4th Runner Up).

This is the first time that Angola has won the Miss Universe title.

Angola started participating in Miss Universe only in 1998 and only had 3 semi-finalists before winning the prestigious Miss Universe 2011 title.

Shamcey Supsup, 3rd Runner Up, Miss Universe 2011

Miss Philippines Shamcey Supsup finished 3rd Runner Up in the just-concluded Miss Universe 2011 pageant held in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

As Miss Universe 2011 3rd Runner Up, Shamcey Supsup was able to place higher than our last year's rep Venus Raj who finished 4th Runner Up.

Congrats Shamcey! The whole Philippines is so proud of you.

I believe though that she should have placed higher than 3rd Runner Up for giving an impressive answer during the final Q&A.

During the Q&A portion, Shamcey was asked with the question "Would you change your religious beliefs to marry the person that you love? Why or why not?", she answered: "If I had to change my religious beliefs, I would not marry the person that I love because the first person that I love is God who created me and I have my faith and my principles and this is what makes me who I am. And if that person loves me, he should love my God too."

Watch a video of Shamcey Supsup during the Miss Universe 2011 Q&A portion:

Last year, Venus finished 4th Runner Up only probably because of her not so impressive answer during the final Q & A, but for this year, Shamcey did so well during the interview portion and yet, a 3rd Runner Up placement is the highest she could reach in the pageant.

This just means that even if a Miss Universe candidate gives the best and most impressive answer during the final Q & A, it's not always a guarantee that she'll get the title. It's still based on to whom the judges and the Miss Universe Organization want to give the title.

But I must admit, the competition was really tough and the top winners, Angola and Ukraine, deserved their placements.

Miss Philippines Earth 2011 Athena Imperial's chances in Thailand

Miss Philippines Earth 2011 has just wrapped up with Casiguran beauty Athena Mae Imperial as winner and will be the country's delegate in the Miss Earth 2011 pageant to be held in Pattaya, Thailand this November.

It will be the first time that the Miss Earth pageant will be held in Thailand and the 2nd consecutive year that it will be held outside the country.

Will it also be the 2nd consecutive year and the 3rd time that the Philippines will fail to enter the semis? Or Athena will be the Philippines' 2nd Miss Earth titleholder?

Predict Athena Imperial's chances in Miss Earth 2011 pageant...

Mykiru is also conducting a similar poll for Shamcey Supsup, the Philippines' rep in Miss Universe 2011 pageant.

The poll, which opened a day after Shamcey won as Binibining Pilipinas-Universe 2011, sees Shamcey Supsup as the next Miss Universe titlist.

Fifty-two (52%) of the voters believe that Shamcey will win the title, while 17% believe she'll end up as a runner-up just like Venus Raj who finished 4th Runner Up in Miss Universe 2010.

Some of the voters think otherwise. 11% of them are not hoping at all that Shamcey will make it to the semis.

Shamcey Supsup's chances in Miss Universe 2011 (as of June 7, 2011):
Winner 52.28%
Runner Up 16.98%
Unplaced 11.14%
Top 15 9.19%
Top 10 8.05%
Miss Photogenic 2.35%
